Turn A Photo Into An Old Poster Part 2

This is part two of my tutorial on turning a photo into an old poster. Be sure and check out part one

Step 11

Go to the menu and select Edit > Fill and select 50% Gray in the box that reads “Use” and click “OK”. Also remember to clip this layer with the Ctrl + G combination.

Step 12

Set the blending mode of this layer to Soft Light. Select the “Burn tool” which you will find in the tool bar. Select a medium soft brush with a size of about 70 and set the range to Shadows, while keeping the Exposure at 100%.

Step 13

Move your cursor over the areas that you want to darken. Burn the edge more than the rest of the poster (do this because edges of old-looking documents are darker, because that’s where the hand has grabbed the paper over the yeas). But do not completely burn the edges, ignore some areas. When you are satisfied with the result, select the “Dodge tool” which is found in the tool bar. Use the same settings in the option bar that you used for the “Burn tool”. Move your cursor over those areas that you want to be lighter.

Step 14

Change the layer’s opacity to about 40% and click OK”

Step 15

Now it is time to make the borders of the colored areas in layers “Dark Color” and “Medium Color” slightly softer: click on the layer mask of the “Dark Color” layer to make it active. Blur a little the layer by going the following path: Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Enter a value of 2 pixels for the Radius and click OK.

Step 16

Click on the layer mask of the “Medium Color” layer to make it active. Select the Filter Blur Gaussian Blur option and enter a value of 2 pixels for the Radius and click OK.

Step 17

Now it is time to add some texture to the image modified until now. Select the “Dodge and Burn” layer to make it active. Create a new fill or adjustment layer and select Pattern. Click on the button with the little black triangle in the Pattern Fill window that will appear and then open the fly-out menu by clicking on the circular button.

Step 18

Select “OK”. Select a 60% value for the pattern that has appeared.

Step 19

Next, change the blending mode of this layer to “Texture” and clip it by pressing Ctrl+G

Step 20

Activate the top layer and click on the “Noise”. Select “OK”
